Did You Know? No More "Lost in Translation" in Japan

Updated: Dec 17, 2024

Arriving in Japan can feel like stepping into a different world, especially if you don’t speak the language.

For those unversed in the Japanese language, navigating everyday situations, like the railway system, can turn into a daunting task.

Seibu Railway is addressing this barrier with an innovative solution.

They've installed a simultaneous translation window.

This technology allows travelers to speak in any of twelve languages listed on the screen. Their words are instantly translated and displayed, enabling ticket masters to swiftly understand and respond to their needs. The responses are then similarly translated back to the traveler’s language, facilitating a smooth, two-way conversation.

Currently in its test phase, this translation window shows how AI can enhance daily experiences—from reducing travel anxiety to helping non-native speakers access essential services.

Seibu’s use of technology reimagines a simple window and turns it into an elegant, transformative tool for communication.

Considering your own business, what could you elegantly enhance with a simple tech tweak that would improve your customer experience significantly?
