Did You Know? IKEA's Latest Innovation: Not What You'd Expect

Updated: Dec 17, 2024

How do you engage a new generation of employees?

You meet them where they play.

IKEA is making a bold move by entering the gaming world. Launching “The Co-Worker Game,” on Roblox on June 24th, this virtual replica of a real world store isn’t about shopping—it’s about experiencing what it’s like to work at IKEA.

IKEA’s new venture will feature 10 paid positions. Virtual sales associates will guide players through the store and help them select items and furniture. They’ll also organize showrooms using digital versions of Ikea furniture, and even serve digital meatballs in the food court.

It’s a hands-on way to understand IKEA’s work environment and culture.

These roles pay exactly the same wages as the UK real-world Ikea jobs, offering young people a unique insight into career paths and progression at IKEA. It’s all part of IKEA’s “Careers Done Different” campaign, aiming to attract the next generation of digitally-savvy employees.

Currently, the Roblox store aims to focus on interaction, not transactions. It’s a space for exploration and learning—much like a real job but in a virtual world. Adding shopping options, like Walmart has, is an expected future iteration.

Thinking about your own business what could be your "Done Differently" initiative this year? How can you meet your audience in unexpected, engaging ways?
